Its fossils, comprising 25 specimens, were discovered in the Otter Sandstone Formation of Devon, England, and were originally assigned to the species Rhynchosaurus spenceri before being reclassified into its own genus in 2008. The genus name, Fodonyx, means "digging claw," referring to the prominent, strong,
